The study aimed to systematically review the effectiveness of photobiomodulation (PBM) for the management of oral mucositis (OM) in cancer patients and to update clinical practice guidelines.
PBM, including low-level laser therapy (LLLT), has been applied for the prevention of oral mucositis using specific wavelengths and energy densities, and has been reported to be particularly effective in patients undergoing HSCT and head and neck radiotherapy.
The results showed that PBM had a statistically significant effect (p<0.05) in preventing oral mucositis in patients receiving HSCT and head and neck radiotherapy, and corresponding clinical practice guidelines were proposed.
